We were welcomed by a graceful traditional Timorese dance. IWDA partner Covalima Community Centre shared their stories of women’s empowerment in Suai, taking us to 3 unique women’s groups who each specialised in small business enterprises including tais, chicken farming and basket weaving. Developing collective thinking, mutual benefits and strong local networks.

After the group’s first bumpy experience of Timor roads, we were met with the warmth and huge smiles of IWDA partner Organisasi Haburas Moris in Maliana, where we saw the simple yet effective initiatives of the local women’s groups. Projects that are meaningful, sustainable & make a genuine difference to the lives of women & their communities. This is what it’s all about.
May 29
Depart Maliana. Bumpy roads, HOT hot springs, more bumps, closed roads, picnic with a view, look out for that pig, buy a tais, wave to the children, more bumps, hold on tight, watch that cliff, chew beetlenut, laugh with the women, more bumps, move over goats, wade through the water, wander past a wedding. Arrive Suai.
